The Weekend That Was – Saturday 26th – Sunday 27th March 2016

Germany 2 Vs 3 England – A young England side fought back from 2-0 down in Berlin on Saturday night to record a famous and historic third consecutive win on German soil. Germany took the lead just before half time when Toni Kroos fired in a long range effort past Jack Butland, who had suffered an injury just before the goal was scored. Butland was stretchered off immediately after the goal with a fractured ankle. Sadly, he will now miss the European Championships in the Summer.

After the break, Mario Gomez doubled Germany’s lead, heading past substitute goalkeeper Fraser Forster. From that point on though it was all England, Harry Kane scored a stunning first after Cruyff turning two defenders on the edge of the box before firing a low shot into the far corner. Jamie Vardy then came off the bench to score an even better goal, back heel flicking Nathaniel Clyne’s cross past Maunel Neuer at his near post to score his first goal in an England shirt.

Then, on 90 minutes, Eric Dier met a corner with a thunderous header that gave England  an unlikely win against the current World Champions. With the Euro’s only a few months away this is a vital confidence boosting win heading into the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland beat Switzerland 1-0 in Dublin thanks to a Ciaran Clark strike and Wales and Northern Ireland drew 1-1 in Cardiff. Craig Cathcart scoring for Northern Ireland and Simon Church equalised late in the game from the penalty spot.
